Indian Mound trail South of the headquarters area about one and one-half miles on a steep
bluff of Red Creek next to the county road, is an obvious old Indian
camp. It has been greatly disturbed by the construction of the road over
the years, but is one of three Indian mounds that can be seen within a
short distance. About fifty yards south from this site, take a pasture
road left off of the county road in an easterly direction. Follow it for
about one-half of a mile as it meanders near the edge of the creek and
around a bend to the southeast fence corner of a large farm field.
Arrowheads can be found at any point along this hike. Go through the tall
wire gate into the field (leaving the gate in whatever condition you found
it- open or closed) and follow the south fence in a western direction.
During the next quarter of a mile are two more Indian mounds about 200
yards apart. You can easily see how the ground has been burned and rocks
collected and heated in the burn area. Broken pieces of flint are
abundant. These areas have been smoothed out over time by plowing, but
still hold considerable unique character to them. To exit the field, turn
right and walk in a northeasterly direction across the smooth, flat,
cleared field to the double gate just left and west of the old corrals and
windmill. Follow the pasture road a short distance west back to the
county road. Follow the county road right and uphill, either by a vehicle
or walking, for a mile and one-half to the headquarters area.
